If you would like to participate in this project, contact us at savingunionvillenatives@gmail.com. The SUN Project is approved by the town of Farmington and as a University of Connecticut Master Gardener Community Outreach Project. Our work is strictly voluntary and we rely on grants and donations for supplies, seeds and plants.
Our work involves the following:
Identifying native and invasive plants on the trail
Removal and monitoring of invasive plants
Tracking the effectiveness of strategies to remove invasives and increase the native plant population
Planting native grasses and perennials in areas where invasives were removed
Community engagement to educate citizens on how to identify invasive plants on their properties and increase native plantings
Planting low maintenance native, drought- tolerant pocket gardens around the benches on this section of the Farmington River Trail
As former educators, we welcome collaborations with local schools who want to teach students about biodiversity, ecology and community action
Invasive removal Community engagement
Planting Natives Fundraising
Photography Research
Currently certified UConn master gardeners and master gardener interns can volunteer for hours to put toward earning or maintaining certification.
If you are a local business or a citizen who would like to donate money to support our need for seeds, supplies and native grasses and perennials, please contact us at savingunionvillenatives@gmail.com. The town of Farmington is our financial sponsor, holding our grants and donations.
